Scientific workshop: Building the future of resilience in complex systems

RICE and Centrale-Supélec's RRSC Chair join forces to meet industrial, climate and societal challenges.

RICE, in collaboration with CentraleSupélec's "Risk and Resilience of Complex Systems" (RRSC) chair, recently took part in a scientific workshop dedicated to building research projects over the next five years. The event brought together researchers, sponsors and experts to define an ambitious roadmap to meet the challenges of resilience, innovation and energy transition.

A strategic day to anticipate challenges

Organized in the form of collaborative exchanges, this workshop aimed to :

• Draw up a joint scientific program, based on the needs expressed by sponsors and industrial partners.
• Prioritize and structure thesis projects according to strategic themes, in line with industrial and scientific challenges.
• Stimulate interdisciplinary exchanges, integrating innovative approaches such as artificial intelligence, simulation and analysis of interdependencies.

Three main themes

The discussions were organized around three major themes:

1️⃣ Systems modeling for risk, resilience and reliability

Participants explored advanced methodologies for :

• Assess the resilience of interconnected infrastructures using complex network analysis.
• Integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning into predictive maintenance and failure model optimization.
• Model the impact of extreme weather events on critical infrastructures, using tools such as graphs and stochastic processes.

2️⃣ Decision support under uncertainty

This session focused on optimization approaches to improve infrastructure management in uncertain contexts:

• Development of condition-based and predictive maintenance strategies.
• Use of mathematical models such as Markov decision processes and reinforcement learning to optimize short- and long-term decisions.

3️⃣ Societal and environmental issues

This last theme, which cuts across the first two, focuses on key issues such as :

• The impact of extreme weather events (storms, floods) on infrastructures.
• Integration of renewable energies and intelligent management of energy networks.
• The development of digital twins to improve the resilience and sustainability of complex systems.

A collaborative methodology for innovation

The thematic workshops took place in three stages:

1. Presentation of results and research proposals by Chair members.
2. Interactive round-table discussions, allowing patrons to express their specific needs.
3. Final synthesis to structure and prioritize ideas, with a view to creating a clear scientific roadmap.

A vision of the future for the resilience of complex systems

The day concluded with the definition of an ambitious thesis program, integrating the strategic orientations of the patrons and academic partners. Some projects will be financed directly by the Chair, while others will be integrated into initiatives undertaken by sponsors or institutional programs.

As a key partner in this initiative, RICE reaffirms its commitment to energy transition and scientific innovation. This collaboration marks an important milestone in the development of sustainable and resilient solutions to the complex challenges of our time.
